Varanasi: 3 Routes Ready For India’s First Urban Ropeway, Trial Run Next Month

Varanasi, one of India's oldest cities, is preparing to launch the country's first urban ropeway system, aiming to revolutionize transportation in the bustling city. This INR 650-crore project, initiated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in March 2023, is a blend of modern engineering and sustainability. With trial runs expected to begin in a month, the project promises to improve travel for both residents and tourists, making it easier to navigate the crowded city streets.

A Step Toward Modern Urban Mobility

The urban ropeway will serve as an eco-friendly and efficient alternative to traditional transportation methods. It is expected to reduce traffic congestion and significantly cut down travel time in Varanasi. The first phase of the project is set to be completed in six months, while the second phase is scheduled to finish by May 2025.

Designed to transport around 6,000 people daily, the ropeway will cover key areas, including Cantt, Vidyapeeth, and Rathyatra. The construction of these stations is almost complete, with cables already installed. This progress indicates that the project is moving closer to its goal, with trial runs planned to ensure smooth operations before the official launch.

Trial Runs and Infrastructure Progress

According to Varanasi Divisional Commissioner Kaushalraj Sharma, the trial runs will last for about one and a half months to test all systems thoroughly. Additional work at stations like Girijaghar and Godaulia is also advancing rapidly. Due to limited space, the Godaulia station will feature a unique three-story design, including a shopping complex on the upper floors to enhance the passenger experience

The station designs have been adjusted for better crowd management. For example, the number of staircases at some stations has been reduced from four to two, making it easier for passengers to move around. The National Highway Logistics Management Limited (NHLML), which is overseeing the project, has confirmed that the infrastructure is nearly ready for trial operations

A Model for Urban Transport in India

The ropeway project is not just a milestone for Varanasi but a benchmark for urban transport across India. By combining innovation with sustainability, it sets an example for other cities looking to improve their transportation systems.

As Varanasi prepares for the trial runs, excitement builds for what this new system will bring. This initiative aims to reduce traffic problems, improve urban travel, and support sustainable development, making Varanasi a leader in modern urban mobility. Other cities may soon follow this path, adopting similar systems to address their transportation challenges.
